Which do you like better, A or B? は、「AとBでは、どちらの方が好きですか」と好みを比べる疑問文です。基本の答え方は I like A better. です。質問に出てくる better を答えにも残すことで、「BよりAの方が好き」という比較の意味を表せます。
Which do you like better? の意味と答え方
意味：AとBでは、どちらの方が好きですか。
語順：Which do you like better, A or B?
答え：I like A better.
基本の語順
Which do you like better, A or B? は、次の順番で作ります。
Which ＋ do you like ＋ better ＋ A or B?
- Which do you like better, cats or dogs?
猫と犬では、どちらの方が好きですか。 - Which subject do you like better, English or math?
英語と数学では、どちらの科目の方が好きですか。 - Which do you like better, summer or winter?
夏と冬では、どちらの方が好きですか。
Which subject のように、比べるものを表す名詞をWhichの後ろに置くこともできます。
答えはI like A better.
たとえば、次のように質問されたとします。
Which do you like better, history or math?
歴史と数学では、どちらの方が好きですか。
歴史の方が好きなら、次のように答えます。
I like history better.
私は歴史の方が好きです。
I like history. でも「私は歴史が好きです」という意味は伝わります。しかし、「数学より歴史の方が好き」という比較をはっきり表すには、答えにも better を残します。
be動詞の比較：The library is older. / The library is.
likeを使う比較：I like history better.
同じ比較表現でも、疑問文で使われている動詞によって答え方が変わります。
than Bは必要か
質問の中ですでにAとBが示されている場合は、I like A better. だけで答えられます。
- Which do you like better, tea or coffee?
- I like tea better.
比較する相手を答えの中でも明確にしたい場合は、than B を加えます。
I like tea better than coffee.
私はコーヒーより紅茶の方が好きです。
than B は必ず必要というわけではありません。質問文から比較相手が分かる場合は、省いても比較の意味が伝わります。
会話で使える発展的な答え方
発展表現
いつもAかBのどちらか一方を選ぶ必要はありません。自分の好みに合わせて、次のように答えることもできます。
- I like both, but I like history better.
両方好きですが、歴史の方が好きです。 - I like them both equally.
どちらも同じくらい好きです。 - I don’t like either.
どちらも好きではありません。
中学英語の基本としては、まず I like A better. を使えるようにしましょう。その後で、必要に応じて発展的な表現を確認すると整理しやすくなります。
likeの比較級・最上級はどう考える？
like自体は変化しない
「より好き」「いちばん好き」と言うときも、動詞の like 自体を変化させるわけではありません。
liker や likest という形にはしません。
like ＋ 目的語 ＋ better で「〜の方が好き」、like ＋ 目的語 ＋ best で「〜がいちばん好き」を表します。
better と best は、好きの程度を比べる働きをしています。

betterとbestの違い
better は、基本的に2つを比べて「どちらの方が好きか」を表すときに使います。
Which do you like better, cats or dogs?
I like cats better.
best は、複数の選択肢の中から「何がいちばん好きか」を表すときに使います。
What subject do you like best?
どの教科がいちばん好きですか。
I like English best.
私は英語がいちばん好きです。
I like English. だけでは「英語が好きです」という意味になるため、「いちばん好き」という意味を明確にする場合は best を残します。
What subject do you like the best? や I like English the best. のように、the best を使う形もあります。学校や教材によって表記が異なるため、まずは使用している教材の形に合わせて覚えましょう。
Do you like …? との答え方の違い
Do you like …? と Which do you like better …? は、どちらもlikeを使いますが、質問の目的と答え方が異なります。

Do you like English? は、英語が好きかどうかをYesまたはNoで尋ねています。
一方、Which do you like better, English or math? は、2つの選択肢から一方を選んで答える疑問文です。そのため、通常は Yes, I do. ではなく、好きな方を主語の後ろに置いて答えます。

WhichとWhoの使い分け
Which is older, the library or the gym?
図書館と体育館では、どちらの方が古いですか。
ものを2つ比べて「どちらの方が〜ですか」と尋ねるときは、Which を使います。ここでは、the library と the gym という2つの建物を比べています。
Who is younger, your brother or Tom’s brother?
あなたの兄弟とトムの兄弟では、どちらの方が若いですか。
人を直接「誰」と尋ねる場合は、基本的に Who を使います。ここでは、your brother と Tom’s brother という2人を比べています。
基本の考え方として、ものを選ぶときは Which、人を直接「誰」と尋ねるときは Who を使います。
ただし、人を表す名詞をWhichの後ろに置く Which student …? のような形もあります。そのため、「人にはWhichを使わない」と覚える必要はありません。
be動詞の短い答え
Which is older, the library or the gym? に対する完全な答えは、次の文です。
- The library is older.
質問文と重なる older を省いて、次のように短く答えることもできます。
- The library is.
The library is older. も The library is. も正しい答えです。後者は、質問文と重なる部分を省いた短い答えです。
人を比べる場合も考え方は同じです。
- 完全な答え：My brother is younger.
- 短い答え：My brother is.
Who is the tallest student in your class?
あなたのクラスでいちばん背が高い生徒は誰ですか。
3人以上の中で「いちばん」を尋ねるときは、the tallest のように最上級を使います。範囲は in your class で表しています。
- 完全な答え：Tom is the tallest student in my class.
- 短い答え：Tom is.
Tom is. だけを暗記するのではなく、完全な答えの文から、質問と重なる部分が省かれていると考えましょう。
最上級のinとof
最上級では、「どの範囲の中でいちばんか」を表す語も大切です。基本的には、場所や集団などの範囲には in、数や複数のものを具体的に示した範囲には of を使います。

of four ではなく、of the four とする点に注意します。「その4人の中で」という特定の範囲を示すため、数の前に the を置きます。
一般動詞をdoesで受ける答え方
Who swims the fastest of the four?
その4人の中で、誰がいちばん速く泳ぎますか。
答え方は、完全な文から考えると分かりやすくなります。
- 完全な答え：Ann swims the fastest of the four.
- 短い答え：Ann does.
この疑問文では、swims という一般動詞が使われています。短い答えでは swims the fastest of the four を繰り返さず、does で受けます。
be動詞の文：Tom is.
一般動詞の文：Ann does.
likeで比較する文：I like history better.
答えに残す語は、疑問文の動詞と、伝えたい比較の意味に合わせて変わります。

よくある質問
Which do you like better? に「I like A.」と答えてもよいですか
I like A. でも「Aが好きです」という意味は伝わります。ただし、「BよりAの方が好き」という比較を明確に表すには、I like A better. とbetterを残します。
betterはlikeの比較級ですか
動詞のlike自体が比較級に変化するわけではありません。like ＋ 目的語 ＋ better の形にして、「〜の方が好き」という比較を表します。liker とはしません。
bestはlikeの最上級ですか
like自体が最上級に変化するわけではありません。like ＋ 目的語 ＋ best の形で、「〜がいちばん好き」という意味を表します。likest とはしません。
than Bは必ず必要ですか
質問文ですでに比較するAとBが示されていれば、I like A better. だけでも答えられます。比較相手を明示したい場合は、I like A better than B. と言えます。
Which do you like better? とWhich one do you like better? は何が違いますか
AとBを質問文の中で示す場合は、Which do you like better, A or B? と言えます。目の前にあるものや、会話の中ですでに分かっている選択肢から「どちらのもの」と選ぶことを明確にしたい場合は、Which one do you like better? とoneを入れられます。
Do you like A? にはどう答えますか
Do you like A? は、Aが好きかどうかを尋ねる一般疑問文です。基本的には Yes, I do. または No, I don’t. と答えます。Which do you like better, A or B? では、好きな方を選んで I like A better. と答えます。
What do you like best? のtheは必要ですか
What do you like best? と What do you like the best? の両方が使われます。学校の学習では、まず使用している教科書や教材の表記に合わせて覚えるとよいでしょう。このページでは基本例を What do you like best? としています。
どちらも同じくらい好きなときはどう答えますか
I like them both equally. と答えられます。「両方好きだが、一方を選ぶならA」という場合は、I like both, but I like A better. と言えます。
