不可算名詞は、数えられない名詞として単数扱いします。そのため、There is much sugar. のように is を使い、How much sugar is there …? の形で量をたずねます。
一方、rooms や chairs のように数えられる名詞は、複数形にして There are を使います。たとえば How many rooms are there in this hotel? のように、How many + 複数形 + are there でたずねます。

前回のセクションでは、数えられる名詞に使う a few / few、数えられない名詞に使う a little / little の違いを学習しました。
今回はそれをさらに発展させ、many と much の使い分け、そしてそれらを There is / There are 構文と組み合わせた形を確認していきます。
coffeeやorange juiceは不可算名詞として考える
まず、coffee「コーヒー」と orange juice「オレンジジュース」を見てみましょう。いずれも液体や飲み物を表す名詞です。
基本的に、液体や飲み物のように、形が一つに決まらないものは不可算名詞として考えます。
ただ、不可算名詞が数えられないと言っても、オレンジジュース5杯、コーヒー3杯のように数を表したい場面はあります。その場合は、名詞そのものに -s を付けるのではなく、数えるための単位を使います。

three coffees や five orange juices のように、飲み物そのものへ -s を付けるのではありません。数える単位である cup / glass を複数形にします。
あたたかい飲み物、特にカップで飲むものは、1杯なら a cup of、2杯なら two cups of、3杯なら three cups of のように表します。
- a cup of coffee：コーヒー1杯
- two cups of tea：紅茶2杯
- three cups of coffee：コーヒー3杯
冷たい飲み物やグラスで飲むものは、a glass of / glasses of を使うことが多くなります。
- a glass of water：水1杯
- two glasses of milk：牛乳2杯
- five glasses of orange juice：オレンジジュース5杯
数を受けるのは cup / glass などの単位名詞で、coffee / juice / water などの不可算名詞には -s を付けないと考えましょう。
数量表現を音で確認したい場合
a cup of coffee / three cups of coffee / a glass of water などは、文字で見るだけでなく、音読で何度も言えるようにすると定着しやすくなります。

How manyは数えられる名詞に使う
次に、There is / There are と組み合わせて確認します。
How many rooms are there in this hotel?
この文は、「このホテルにはいくつ部屋がありますか」という意味です。
- How：どれくらい
- many：多くの
- rooms：部屋
- are there：ありますか
- in this hotel：このホテルに
room は数えられる名詞なので、「いくつ」とたずねるときは How many + 複数形 を使います。したがって、How many rooms になります。
また、rooms が複数形なので、be動詞は is ではなく are です。つまり、How many rooms are there …? となります。
答えるときは、次のように言えます。
- There are twenty rooms.
- There are twenty.
すでに質問の中で rooms が出ているため、答えでは rooms を省いて There are twenty. と言うこともできます。
ただし、It is twenty rooms. とはしません。質問が are there の形なので、答えも There are にそろえます。
How muchは数えられない名詞に使う
数えられない名詞の場合は、many ではなく much を使います。
How much sugar is there in the pot?
この文は、「ポットの中にはどれくらい砂糖が入っていますか」という意味です。
sugar「砂糖」は、ふつう不可算名詞として扱います。そのため、How many sugars ではなく、How much sugar になります。
また、不可算名詞は単数扱いなので、be動詞は are ではなく is です。

- × How much sugar are there in the pot?
答えるときも、There is を使います。
- There is only a little.
- There’s only a little.
- There is only a little sugar.
a little は「少し」という意味です。すでに sugar の話をしているため、答えでは sugar を省いて There is only a little. と言うこともできます。
many / much と is / are の対応を整理する
many / much と is / are は、名詞が数えられるかどうかで決まります。

How many rooms are there? では、rooms が複数形なので are を使います。
How much sugar is there? では、sugar が不可算名詞なので is を使います。
このように、There構文では、後ろに来る名詞を見て is / are を選びます。数えられる名詞が複数形なら are、不可算名詞なら is です。
英作文で不可算名詞を使う場合
There is much water. / There are many rooms. / I want a glass of orange juice. のような文は、並べ替えだけでなく英作文でも使います。is / are、many / much、単位名詞を英文の中で確認したい場合は、添削で見直せます。
